Omalos Plateau, Chania, Crete

The Omalos Plateau is a mountain plateau located in the western part of the island of Crete, Greece. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,050 meters above sea level and covers an area of around 7 square kilometers. The plateau is surrounded by high mountains, including the Lefka Ori range, which is the highest in Crete, with peaks reaching over 2,400 meters.

The Omalos Plateau is known for its natural beauty and is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. The Samaria Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Europe, begins in the plateau and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The plateau is also home to several small villages and traditional Cretan tavernas, where visitors can enjoy local cuisine.

During World War II, the Omalos Plateau was the site of a major battle between Allied and German forces, known as the Battle of Crete. Today, the plateau serves as a peaceful and scenic location for visitors to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of Crete.
