Crete Itinerary from Chania – 5 Day Relaxed Holiday Plan

Planning your holidays in Crete can feel confusing at first, especially if it is your first time visiting Crete. The island is large, distances are longer than they look on the map and trying to see everything often turns the trip into a race.

This is a realistic 5-day plan based on what most guests actually enjoy during their stay. It combines famous beaches, villages, nature and free time so you experience Crete properly and still return home relaxed.

Every schedule can of course be adjusted depending on weather and your preferences. Our reception team is always happy to help you organise excursions, boat trips or transport during your stay.

Day 1 – Chania Old Town – First Day of Your Crete Itinerary

After arrival, keep the first day simple.

Enjoy the beach near the hotel or relax by the pool and recover from the flight. Later in the afternoon head to Chania Old Town. Walk through the narrow alleys, explore the Venetian harbor and have dinner by the sea.

The atmosphere at sunset is one of the most romantic experiences in Crete and the perfect gentle start to your holiday.

No car is necessary for this day. Taxi or local bus works perfectly.

Day 2 – Balos Lagoon & Gramvousa – Must Visit in Your Crete Itinerary from Chania

One of the most famous landscapes in Greece and absolutely worth visiting.

There are several comfortable ways to experience it:

• Large excursion boat from Kissamos port
• Smaller speedboat experience
Private boat rental organised through our reception

We will help you choose the best option depending on weather and availability so you enjoy the lagoon without stress.

Tip: Leave early morning to avoid heat and crowds.

Day 3 – Villages & Winery – Experience Authentic Crete

Now it’s time to see the real Crete.

Drive through Theriso Gorge and reach the historic mountain village of Theriso. Continue towards the countryside and visit a local Cretan winery for tasting and lunch.

This day is slower, authentic and very different from the beach days. Many visitors say it becomes one of their favourite memories.

We can recommend wineries and traditional tavernas depending on the day.

Day 4 – Elafonissi & Kedrodasos

Pink sand, shallow turquoise water and a unique natural setting.

Elafonissi beach is famous, but nearby Kedrodasos beach offers a quieter natural alternative surrounded by cedar trees. Many guests combine both on the same day.

Options to visit:
Rental car
• Organised excursion

Ask reception which day is best according to wind direction. Weather matters a lot on the west coast.

A unique experience in Europe but physically demanding. Start very early morning and wear proper shoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for Crete?
Of course not for the whole island, but it is a very good start to explore Western Crete comfortably without rushing.

Should I rent a car in Crete?
A rental car gives you maximum flexibility to visit many places, however you can also explore easily with organised excursions or private transfers arranged with your activities.

Is Balos or Elafonissi better?
They are completely different experiences and most visitors enjoy visiting both on separate days.

Can I visit Samaria Gorge without a tour?
It is possible but logistically complicated. Organised transport is usually the easiest and most relaxing option.
